Dietitian vs. Nutritionist

What's the difference?

Dietitians in Australia, and the term 'dietitian', are regulated. All dietitians are nutritionists, however not all nutritionists are dietitians as the qualifications needed to become a nutritionist are unregulated and often limited. Additionally, dietitians are trained extensively in disease states, whereas most nutritionists are able to provide general healthy eating advice only.

Dietitians with an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) credential abide by the Dietitians Australia code of conduct, are skilled as outlined in the National Competency Standards for Dietitians, as well as maintaining annual training and education quotas to further their knowledge and practice.

APD's are the only nutrition professional recognised by Medicare, DVA and many private health insurers. You can check whether or not a practitioner is an APD by searching them on the Dietitians Australia website register.
